Hi :)

I'm a recent graduate and, somehow, I've managed to land myself a job as a designer in the world of print, allbeit very much on the bottom rung of the ladder in the grand scale of things (think takeaway menus and you're there).

I do feel lucky - I know that not many graduates make it even this far in design.

However, I do feel that this position and/or company may not last forever and I would like to eventually move onwards and upwards into design work that REALLY makes a difference. I'm working on getting my one-or-two years' studio experience before moving on... if I can!

Can anyone give me any tips on the best ways to make the next step? I keep hearing the words "agency experience" being thrown around...! ;)

Are agencies the best way to go to get "real" experience? How do I crack that egg? What should or shouldn't be in my CV and portfolio? Where do I go from here?

HI,

I was looking on the internet whilst looking for some work myself and came across your thread.

so naturally I applied to the site to reply and ask some questions myself :).

Not being a graduate myself, I can say that finding a job in design or detail in the current climate is very difficult. I am now having to look into doing more training as companies seem to be changing from autocad to soildworks or solid edge. One bit of advice I would give you if you want to get another job doing design is build a good portfolio putting in stuff from when you first started working for your company to the present day so your next company can see your progress.

As for your c.v I would just stick to the basic's, check online to get a feel for what is a good c.v, it doesnt have to be great just simple. Belive me i've done mine 4 times and still think I could cut down on some things.

hope this helps.
